Fun for non-skiers is readily available in Val Gardena. For lovers of the great outdoors, there are 50km of well cared for winter walking paths and trails, and walking in the Alpe di Suisi is particularly spectacular.
Leisure activities in Val Gardena
As well as winter hiking visitors can try snow-shoeing and ice-climbing, visit the outdoor (and indoor) ice-skating rinks, or go horse-riding, sleigh riding, paragliding, curling or sledging. The 6km Ortisei toboggan run on Rasciesa is one of the most thrilling in the Alps, and dog-sledding with Siberian huskies is great fun for children. There are several spa and wellness facilities and an indoor and outdoor pool in Ortisei.
The tourist offices in Selva, Santa Cristina and Ortisei are helpful and have regular programs of free events and information on things to do. Day trips to nearby Italian towns and cities, including Verona, or great for a change of scene.
The region is famous for its wood-carving industry which has been going strong since the 17th century, and there are several museums exhibiting great examples. Wood-carving is very much still in practice and carved figurines and toys make for great keepsakes and gifts from the region. There is also a lovely traditional Christmas Market in Santa Cristina throughout December.
