Steamboat ski resort offers a great range of varied skiing for all ages and abilities. There are 165 different ski runs to be enjoyed, including plenty of long runs (the longest is three miles), four terrain parks and some exciting back country skiing. The resort’s famous ‘Champagne Powder’ snowfall is consistently good, and the dedicated resort park staff use high-tech grooming techniques to keep the ski runs in optimum condition. There is a good network of fast ski lifts, and the main high-speed lift traverses from base to summit in just under five minutes.
Just like the surrounding Colorado mountain peaks, Steamboat’s ski runs have some interesting names. For beginner slopes, head to Why Not, Broadway, Sundial and Rendezvous Way. Intermediate skiers can hit Buddy’s Run, Heavenly Daze, Rainbow, Vagabond and Flintlock, as well as Tomahawk, Quick-draw and High Noon in the Sundown area. Experts looking for a challenge can head to the spooky sounding trio of Twilight, Closets and Shadows, as well as Valley View, See Me, Morningside Park and Christmas Tree Bowl.

Snow parks in Steamboat
Steamboat ski resort has four terrain parks catering to different ski abilities. Lil’ Rodeo is best for beginners, with small features and the Mini-Mavs half-pipe. Rabbit Ear is ideal for intermediate skiers, with bigger jumps and kickers to challenge. For the experts, there’s the mighty Bashor snow terrain park with expert features, challenging jumps and the excellent Mavericks Super-pipe, measuring up at a dizzying 450feet.
Off-piste in Steamboat
For off-piste skiing there are several access gates to some exciting (unpatrolled) backcountry. The areas around Mt Werner, Fish Creek Canyon and Steamboat Springs are particular favourites, and Snowcat skiing is very popular in the area.
Lift passes in Steamboat
Steamboat lift passes may not be the cheapest Stateside, but if you’re travelling with children, then their ‘Kids Ski Free’ policy can make a big difference. Children under 12 ski for free on the same days as their parents ( on 5+ day ski passes). The offer applies to one child (aged 6-12) per adult, and all children under five go free regardless.
For powder hounds, Steamboat offers a ‘First Tracks’ pass, available to expert skiers and snowboarders only. The pass allows you to hop on the lifts early and enjoy the run of Steamboat’s freshly fallen Champagne Powder before breakfast.
