The good news is that St Moritz is just 5km (15 minute drive) from Upper Engadine Airport and is therefore easily accessible by air. The bad news is that the closest airport available to those of us without private helicopters and jets is Zurich, around 200km away. The transfer time by road from Zurich is almost three hours whilst the train will take half an hour more again and involves one change at Chur. This final leg of the rail journey is spectacular though so try and stay awake to see the scenery! There are daily flights connecting Zurich to the little airstrip outside this remote resort, but you will need fairly deep pockets to take advantage of these.
- Zurich to St Moritz 212km, transfer time just over 3 hrs
Driving to St Moritz is likely to take around 10 hours from Calais and the best route is to take the motorways through Metz, Strasbourg and Basel to Zurich. St Moritz is not the easiest place to get to by rail, but if you don’t fancy the long drive then the train journey is lovely – the time flies by as you gaze at the scenery and you arrive in grand style close to the centre of the resort. St Moritz is popular all year round so you’ll need to plan ahead in busy times. It is possible to do the train journey in a day with an early Eurostar service from London. Changing in Paris, Zurich and finally in Chur you will arrive late at night in resort on the narrow gauge Rhatische Bahn train..
