The extensive Mayrhofen ski area is spread over two sides of the valley. On one side is the Ahorn, a great spot on a powder day, serviced by the Ahornbahn cable car. This is by far the quieter ski area and you can often walk straight on, bag yourself a window spot and enjoy the views. For more extensive terrain head to Mayrhofen proper via the Penkenbahn (usually very busy!) or Horbergbahn lifts, from where you can make your way to Eggalm in the north or the Horberg in the south. For full details, take a look at our Mayrhofen piste map on the Resort overview page. Don’t forget that the Ziller Valley is dotted with ski resorts, most of them serviced by the Zillertalbahn train.
If you fancy heading out of town and getting a taste of some new slopes, a trip to the Hintertux Glacier is a great experience. It can be very cold in mid-winter though, so check conditions before you go. For a great top-to-bottom run, with a1500m descent, head to Kaltenbach. It’s really quite amazing to be stood at the top looking down into the valley that 30 minutes later you will be standing in.

There are a few options for off-piste skiing around Mayrhofen. In the right conditions the lower routes down to Hippach and Finkenberg are both poplar, but for more reliable snow conditions head higher up the valley to Vorderlanersbach.

You can also purchase the Zillertal Super Ski Pass, which gives you access to all of the Ziller Valley resorts (a grand total of around 170 lifts) on one mega pass.
There is one excellent terrain park in Mayrhofen featuring separate areas for children, intermediates, pros etc. There’s something to suit everyone here, but the Hitertux glacier (an easy daytrip from Mayrhofen) also has a World Cup pipe.
There are plenty of ski schools in Mayrhofen offering classes for all ages and abilities. There are good nursery areas for children, but intermediates are better served here than beginners, as the areas used for lessons are open to all and often become crowded.
Equipment hire in Mayrhofen is reliable and fairly priced with several places on the high street to choose between. Manni is a good bet, offering a great range of ski and snowboard gear and friendly, knowledgeable staff.
