This is one of the least accessible resorts in Europe but many would argue that it is worth the effort. The nearest stations are Tirano (48 km away) or Zernez on the Swiss side of the border, 28km away, and in terms of airports the most popular are Milan and Zurich. Both of these airports are over 200km away but you may be able to cut the journey time down slightly if you can find a flight into Bergamo rather than Milan Malpensa.
- Milan to Livigno 248km, transfer time around 3.5hrs
- Innsbruck to Livigno 180km, transfer time around 3.75hrs
- Zurich to Livigno 206km, transfer time around 3hrs
- Bergamo to Livigno 176km, transfer time around 3.25hrs
Be prepared for a 4 hour road transfer and if transferring by public transport the train and bus combination from Milan will take at least five hours. A new taxi share system has been put in place for winter 2010 to replace the public bus service from Milan. The rail journey from the UK is not too arduous with regular services between Zurich and Zernez to follow on from the fast trip from Paris. As an alternative there is an overnight sleeper train from Paris to Milan and connecting trains to Tirano.
Buses to the resort meet most trains at Tirano and Zernez. If you opt to drive, be it in a hire car or your own vehicle, be prepared for the last few kilometres of the journey to be tough and snow chains are an important bit of equipment to have (and know how to use!). The drive from Calais will take around 11 hours assuming there are no delays.
