Back to Hintertux

At under 90km from Innsbruck airport, which is now served by Easyjet, Hintertux is surprisingly accessible despite its location at the head of a remote valley. The road transfer is around an hour and a half and it is very easy by train as far as neighbouring Mayrhofen which has its own station at the head of the narrow gauge Zillertalbahn railway. The rail journey to Mayrhofen from Innsbruck takes just over an hour and a half and then you will need to catch a bus or take a taxi up the Tux valley. If you can’t find flights to Innsbruck consider looking at Salzburg and Munich too, with a transfer time by road of under two hours from either. There are plenty of mainline trains between either of these cities to Innsbruck and Jenbach (the junction with the narrow gauge railway) and hire car companies at all of the airports. Roads are generally ok but if you need snow chains it may just be on the final leg above Mayrhofen.

  • Innsbruck to Hintertux 90km, transfer time just over 1hr
  • Salzburg to Hintertux 128km, transfer time just over 3hrs
  • Munich to Hintertux 114km, transfer time around 3hrs

A lot of visitors arrive in resort having travelled all the way by train to Mayrhofen with the Eurostar service to Paris and easy onward connections to Zurich and Innsbruck. This option can be quite economical, especially when flight prices go up in high-season. Self-driving is another way to beat high flight prices but the journey from Calais is 1100km and will take around 11 hours. Just beyond Reims you will need to join the motorways heading East towards Strasbourg, Stuttgart and then on to Munich.
