Skiing together can be an uplifting experience but add in the luxury of the Kulm Hotel in St Moritz and a moonlit piste and you have a recipe for romantic success. The romance starts when you arrive by train on one of the most beautiful routes in the world, and are met by your Kulm chauffeur at the station and whisked to the hotel. The Kulm plays a significant role in the history of the chic resort of St Moritz, and dates back over 160 years. In 1928 and 1948, the park of the hotel was the venue for the opening of the Winter Olympic Games.
As you might expect, guests of the hotel are able to participate in lots of activities as well as skiing. The hotel overlooks the lake, frozen in winter, home to winter polo, horse racing and even cricket on ice. And when there is a full moon, guests can also participate in private ‘Gluna Plaina’ (full moon) moonlight skiing on the nearby local mountain of Diavolezza. This is exclusively for guests of the Kulm and its nearby sister property the Grand Hotel Kronenhof, making it a very special experience.
We arrived at the lift station with flaming torches on the path up and candles on the steps up to the gondola. It was slightly disconcerting to be taking a gondola in the dark but it was amazing to see the lights of the villages below us and the brightness of the stars above us (an unusual sight for a city dweller). At just under 3,000m, Diavolezza has stunning views over the Piz Bernina and the Piz Palü.
The plan was to ski a few runs and then settle in for supper in the Berghaus Diavolezza at the summit. The lack of moonlight initially caused a small change but everything was smoothly rescheduled so that we tucked into our delicious fondue first. Then, when the moon made an appearance, the skiers all set off. Those who chose not to ski down were able to descend in the gondola. The piste down is an easy red – very wide in most places and with very few steep parts and because the piste was beautifully groomed after the day’s skiing, you feel like the first people on it.
Once your eyes adapt to the darkness, you can easily see where you are going but there’s also the reassurance of the hotel hosts looking after you from the front and back of the group (the leader was skiing with a torch) and there were several checkpoints on the way down.
One of our group admitted afterwards “I kept thinking this is all wonderful, but wondered when we would get to the tough part, but we never did…”
The full moon experience is free for Kulm guests – our only advice is reserve your places early and wrap up warm.
The Kulm really is the perfect place for a romantic get-away. To complete your romantic break, you can also book the private spa suite for two. You’ll have your own steam bath, bio sauna, double water-jet bathtub, heated waterbed and lounge and (of course) Champagne and healthy nibbles. If you miss out on booking the private area, the main spa area is lovely and I spent ages in the outside pool area, just soaking in the luxury of a trip to this special place, wondering how soon I could come back.
