This mountain restauarnt is at its most glorious on summer evenings when the view is breathtaking. Le Sonalon remains open all year round, although it isn’t marked on the piste map as it can only be reached by an off-piste route (check there is adequate snow coverage before setting off). It’s recommended that you take a local guide as you have to ski down to the restaurant following the line of the Savoleyres lift for some way; you’ll need to be able to turn in deep snow.
Once you’ve eaten, you can hike down the road to Les Esserts and catch a bus back to Verbier. If all that doesn’t put you off then this is a charming place to visit; modern yet cosy, with a bright wood fire and a wonderful view (though be warned that when it’s very cold it’s obstructed by the cover pulled across the terrace). Food is local and seasonable, for example game and wild mushrooms. Main courses range from 16-42 chf so it’s an expensive place but if you’d like a treat, and have a guide with you, then it’s worth planning a visit.
Lifts: 200 Savoleyres (off-piste access only). Pedestrian: walking from Les Esserts (around 20 minutes) or by car (depending on recent snowfall).
