Hotel Alexane is the latest luxury hotel welcoming guests at the pretty French village of Samoëns. Situated smack bang opposite the tourist office, the hotel is just a few minutes’ walk on flat ground to the rustic town centre, and a ten-minute walk to the gondola (or take the hotel shuttle bus on demand). The gondola connects skiers to the Grand Massif ski area, so Flaine and other ski resorts are just a short ski away.
This four-star hotel, which opened in December 2018, was built by French alpine property developer MGM. The lobby is spacious, with an abundance of sofas and niches, plus a fireplace, bar and piano. The friendly staff are happy to help in English or French.
Local stone and wood are used throughout, mixing traditional materials with modern design. The luxurious furnishings and decor are influenced by big mountains from around the world — the Rockies, the Himalayas and the Andes. Each floor of the hotel is decorated according to one of these places, dictating the colour scheme and fittings within each hotel room.
Comprising the usual range of hotel room sizes, the cluster of three buildings also houses apartments of up to 110m2 for up to 10 people. Rooms feature soft lighting and toiletries from local supplier Pure Altitude. High-tech creature comforts include TVs with options for Netflix and YouTube, plenty of power plugs for charging gadgets, and a strong WiFi signal everywhere. Many rooms open onto their own large balcony overlooking the local peaks.
Breakfast is an optional extra when you book at Hotel Alexane. It’s served in your room for the same price, or at the independently-run Italian restaurant Fabio, situated within the hotel, which provides a convenient but modest range of options for those in a rush. Those not in a hurry might prefer to head into the town centre for a breakfast with a view.
After a day on the piste, skiers can leave their ski boots on their very own boot warmers in the spacious, secure locker room with individual lockers, accessible by elevator. The hotel also boasts a cinema room, a fun-packed games room, a kids’ play area, a wellness centre, a high-tech, well-equipped gym and a spa with an indoor pool large enough to swim laps. There are also conference rooms for those who wish to mix business with pleasure.
The wellness centre offers beauty treatments for individuals and couples ranging from sports massage to flotation baths. Afterwards, guests can recline on a heated lounge chair with subtle vibration built in while admiring the view of the mountains or the wall made of Himalayan salt rock.
The pool area is not attached to the wellness rooms. Indeed, the hotel’s layout resembles a mouse maze off the lobby, where robed people can be seen wandering the corridor trying to find the pool entrance. Once found, guests can swim in the pool or unwind in the sauna, the hamam, or the large hot tub. There’s also a pool for kids. The more adventurous might enjoy the cold Nordic bath and the fun sensory shower.
For the 2019 ski season, a double room costs €150 per night in low season or €370 in high season. Those driving to Samoëns ski resort can park in the hotel’s free underground car park after check-in.
