Janine Garnett is the kids’ skiwear buyer at Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports. She’s also mum to Poppy aged 12, so quite the expert when it comes to choosing kids ski gear. We asked for her top tips on how to pick the best kids ski jackets this season.
“Performance fabrics have revolutionised ski clothing. They’ve reduced the bulk and stiffness and increased breathability and warmth. From all in ones for tots, through to jackets with street-cred for teens, there’s a great choice of ski jackets for kids. Needs change as children grow and change, so I’ve picked out a few of my favourite pieces for different age groups.”
Ski gear for toddlers
All in ones are the order of the day for this age group. The good news is little ones no longer need to feel like stranded starfish.
I love this suit – it’s light, compressible and warm, even when wet. It also has Sherpa fleece lining in the hood and top body – parts that are more likely to be exposed. The asymmetric zip is a clever touch making it easier to get on and off. And the fold over mitts and booties are so practical – one less thing to remember.
Primary school kids gear
Although they are more independent, they’re still not necessarily that good at looking after themselves (or their belongings) at this age. If your kids are going off to ski school, you’ll want to know that they’re going to come back with everything they went with.
Look out for kids ski jackets with glove loops and pockets dedicated to accessories, such as goggles and ski passes. And a helmet compatible hood will be a must too as they’ll be required to wear one.
Ski kit for teenagers
By this stage you’ll have much less influence over what they wear. But a good compromise could be to go for a jacket that they’re happy to wear on the slopes and back at home.
Luckily there is a good selection of slope to street gear available this year. The Didriksons Zoe parka with fur hood ticks all the boxes for the girls and comes in pink or navy blue. And for cool teenage boys (or tomboys), the DC Cash Jacket rocks the skater look.
All of these kids ski jackets are available at Ellis Brigham stores, and online. Thanks very much to Janine for the sage advice.
