Zurs - Austria

Zurs (Tsoors) may just be one of the best kept secrets in the world of snowsports. However, this sleepy hamlet won’t suit everyone. The remoteness of the village, one of the world’s first ‘purpose built’ resorts at an altitude of 1700m, and the frequent closure of the only access road (the impressive Flexenpass) mean that there is little to do beyond the confines of your hotel. It is essentially a collection of no more than 25 luxury hotels, where celebrities and the mega-wealthy go to ski. The first lift was built in Zurs in 1937 and the area regularly achieves 9 metres of snowfall a year (2m more than St Anton). Nowadays it is linked to Lech and offers good skiing for all abilities. Getting to Zurs can be arduous, with transfer times of around 3 hours from Zurich or Munich, but it can certainly be worth the effort, particularly if you have deep pockets and enjoy being pampered.

  • Where to stay

Zurs is the playground of the rich and famous. Needless to say that you will not find a studio the size of a shoe box capable of sleeping 10! You won’t find catered chalets here either and the only apartments tend to be linked to luxury ‘residences’. Zurs is not a town or even a village as we know it, more just a more...

  • Food and drink

The chic resorts of Lech and Zurs are not far from St Anton, the party capital of the Arlberg Region of Austria, and are covered by the same lift pass. That, however, is where the similarity ends. Where St Anton has a non-stop party feel and can occasionally resemble a snowy Magaluf, Lech and Zurs can more...

  • On the piste

Zurs offers extensive skiing in beautiful scenery for all standards of skiers. Beginners will be impressed by the quality of the nursery slopes, but the progression to the blue runs can be frustrating and more difficult than elsewhere. Snowboarders are well catered for too with few drag lifts and not too many flat sections on more...
