Champoluc – Italy

Compare this resort

Champoluc is a traditional Italian ski village with plenty of rustic charm, tucked away in the Aosta Valley in the Northwest of Italy. Even though it’s easily accessible from Turin, Malpensa, Linate and Bergamo, it maintains an authenticity lacking in many of the more developed resorts. The village lies at 1570m and is at the top of the Ayas Valley. The surrounding ski area is known as Monterosa and covers three valleys; Champoluc, Gressoney and Alagna.  There are 180km of piste at the foot of the majestic Monterosa mountain chain and almost the equivalent in off–piste terrain (snow conditions permitting) which allows the resort to cater well for all types of skiers and boarders.

The Monte Rosa range is particularly stunning at sunrise and sunset when the mountains turn pink (thus their name..). Much of the mountain remains undeveloped and is perfect for off-piste skiing, for which the area is known to a discerning few. There are also great heli-skiing opportunities (unlike in France, the sport is permitted in Italy). Alagna, known as ‘Free Ride Paradise’, has become a Mecca for advanced off-piste skiers and boarders alike.  At the other end of the scale, the Monterosa range is one of the largest ski areas in Italy with plenty of friendly terrain and well-groomed and largely uncongested pistes for families and intermediates to enjoy. The area has benefited from many recent lift upgrades; it boasts Italy’s only funicular and has no button lifts or T-bars.
