Les Gets – Food and drink
The people of Les Gets are very proud of the culinary traditions of the area and the town punches above its weight with a much better choice of eateries than in many resorts twice the size. Local food tends to be heavily biased towards charcuterie, melted cheese and potatoes but Les Gets has everything else from Kebabs to scallops and ostrich fillets! The après scene in Les Gets is fun but understated and whilst there are many bars offering the usual range of drinks there is very little when it comes to late night party action. The one discotheque is barely worthy a mention!
Restaurants in resort
There is a good selection of restaurants in resort, with most offering traditional Savoyard cuisine such as Fondue. Many have good children’s menus, such is the family nature of the resort, and you will never go far wrong with L’Optraken next to the outdoor ice rink for a good all-round menu. If you are on a budget the Case K2 restaurant is a good-value choice that specializes in crepes, omelettes and burgers. For a real treat the R’Mize in the old town offers a great range of tasty if not cheap specialties including scallops, salmon steaks and bison.
On the mountain you will be spoilt for choice with some of the best mountain food in France. La Rosettaz at the top of the Rosta is a favourite and for a quick good-value snack and friendly service try Les Blanchots towards Nyon. There are a handful of restaurants on the plateau at the top of the Chavannes gondola and if you can’t travel too far with little ones the Yeti or the Grand Cry will make for a good lunch stop in the sunshine. In this same area the restaurant linked to the Hotel de la Croix Blanche offers superb food on a suntrap terrace.
Après ski is fun but Les Gets will never claim to be a party town. The Les Gets après ski scene centres around a number of lively bars in the village centre, some with live music and many with regular promotions and happy hours. Several of the bars show live football and rugby. For those who wish to continue partying after closing time L’Igloo, the only dico in town, is open from midnight until late! For an unusual selection of beers both on tap and in bottles try the Black Bear Canadian Bar. Below that is the Pub Irlandais with its own microbrewery too.
Eat and drink on a budget
Like most ski towns eating and drinking in Les Gets does not come cheap. However, the impact on your wallet can be minimised by taking advantage of happy hour promotions in bars such as Bar Bush and the Dublin Inn. Rather than eating in one of the many restaurants why not consider a cheaper takeaway burger from the 412 Snack or Case K2 or a pizza from Pizzalino on the Rue du Centre. If you prefer a restaurant ambience there are several that help you save money by offering 2- or 3-course set menus, often for around the 20 Euro mark.
