Bulgaria is eager to catch up with the rest of Europe when it comes to standards, value for money and snowsports. Getting around the country is easy, with cheap and efficient public transport to ferry you between the cities and into the remoter, rural idylls.
Despite prices rising since becoming a member of the EU, the country boasts the cheapest package deals in Europe and as a result is a magnet for an increasingly large number of visitors each year that would ordinarily be priced out by the usual ski and snowboard resorts.
There are disadvantages. Slopes are varied and more than adequate for the beginner to intermediate, but advanced skiers and snowboarders might find the terrain limiting. Massive foreign investment has created a construction boom – even in the mountain resorts.
