Saalbach - Austria

Saalbach is one of the biggest and most easily navigable resorts in Austria and offers a nice blend of Austrian charm with typical French convenience. No matter where you start from or which direction you travel in, the ‘Ski Circus’ of Saalbach, Hinterglemm and Leogang is a great circuit, and in the right conditions it is unbeatable. However, the snow is not as reliable as in many other resorts, with low altitude and many south facing slopes leading to patchy conditions at times, despite extensive snowmaking.

Essentially a hotel half-board resort with few chalets, visitors enjoy the varied mountain restaurants, picture postcard scenery and active après ski in the local bars and clubs where loud music until the early hours of the morning is the norm.  It is difficult to find a more easily accessible resort with better infrastructure or livelier venues. Just check the snow reports before booking!

  • Five to try

    -    Catch a snowcat up to the Spielberghaus for dinner and then return by toboggan. Truly exhilatrating.
    -    Follow the well-signposted circuit to take in the entire ski area in a day.
    -    Take a trip to nearby Zell am See or even the city of Salzburg for the Sound of Music experience.
    -    Have a go at driving go-karts on ice at Saalbach’s ice karting centre.
    -    Have a beer or three in Zum Turn – a converted jail with a surprisingly lively atmosphere.

  • Planning your trip

The obvious choice of airport for Saalbach is Salzburg given the fact that it is just 90km away and around an hour and a half by road. Salzburg is served by Ryanair and Easyjet nowadays from several regional airports across the UK. Munich is another option but you should allow in excess of more...

  • Where to stay

Whilst the centre of this resort is very compact the outskirts seem to run for miles and miles along the valley, so when booking any accommodation the first thing to do is to check the location on a map and the frequency of any bus services. By staying out of the centre you should also expect more...

  • Food and drink

The resort of Saalbach and the neighbouring village of Hinterglemm just two kilometres away boast almost 70 restaurants, 35 bars and 9 discos between them. Together with Leogang the entire ‘Ski Circus’ area has 40 mountain restaurants too, many of which not only provide great more...

  • On the piste

Saalbach has a lot to offer most snowsports fans, but boarders are particularly spoilt with 13km of ‘boarders only’ pistes. The efficient lift system makes it easy for beginners to progress on to the quieter blue slopes of neighbouring Hinterglemm, and intermediates will think they’ve more...
