Saalbach is one of the biggest and most easily navigable resorts in Austria thanks to the convenience of a high-speed lift network and lift stations right in the village centres. And yet, thankfully, it retains its Austrian charm, and full-on après mayhem. No matter where you start from or which direction you travel in, the ‘Ski Circus’ of Saalbach, and the linked villages of Hinterglemm and Leogang, is a great circuit, and in the right conditions it is unbeatable.
The conditions aren’t always the best though – the many south-facing slopes suffer in the sun, and the relatively low altitude doesn’t help, although extensive snowmaking does its job well.
There’s something for everyone, and often in close proximity, making this a good resort choice for groups of mixed ability. Above Hinterglemm there’s night skiing and a night-opening terrain park, complete with heated gondola – they know how to spoil you!
Most of the accommodation is in hotels, as are most of the restaurants. The active après ski in the local bars and clubs is a hit, starting early up on the mountain, moving on to umbrella bars in town, and moving into clubs and bars often with live music, and plenty of people still have their ski boots on in the early hours.
