The passionate skiers at Ski Solutions had one thing in mind when they saw a gondola erected on home turf - skiing. Despite the obvious lack of July snow, they rallied a bunch of ski buddies, dragged the ski kit back out of the back of the wardrobe and headed off for an outing.

Well the weather reports in Mont Blanc were not good so we were unable to attempt a summit let alone get past 13,000 feet (Mont Blanc is at about 15000, Kilimanjaro at about 19500). Severe thunderstorms rolled in with 50-60 mph winds and a drop of about 30-40 inches of snow. This posed a few problems.

The traditional start of summer in the States saw a different type of weather last weekend in the Teton Mountains of northwest Wyoming. Instead of frisbee golf, lawn games and BBQ, the holiday weekend saw powder turns in the high country, and a ‘wintery mix’ down low in the valley (including the town of Jackson, much to the chagrin of visiting tourists not ready for a shot of 20 to 30F [-6 to -1C] degree temps).

What a week to finish off this excellent season. There was some moaning and groaning when Les Arcs' management decided to close all of Peisey/Vallandry and Arc1600 and all but the Transarc gondola in 1800.

Most people think living in Whistler is a 24/7 party. The truth is there can be spells where nothing is going on. Weeks of boredom. Being one of the most expensive places to live it's usually because everyone is broke. For instance there is only one festival in Whistler during the winter however; when it rains it pours.

We are now in our last week of skiing in La Rosiere and it has just not stopped snowing! For the last six days we’ve had fresh powder on the slopes every morning and, surprisingly for this time of year, it’s staying there all day. A few weeks ago and it was another story: The snow was melting, grass was emerging, pistes were closing and people were sunbathing. However, now it’s back to wearing January weather clothing, thermals and all!

As the ski season draws to a close we expect sunny days and slushy snow. This year that came and went and now it's back to winter conditions. Tuesday was the only day this week where the weather was supposed to clear. Alarms were set and at 9am, a peek outside was met with dense fog. I was all but ready to go back to sleep when a friend called with promises of blue skies in the forecast for later on.
