While there is still one run in Kitzbühel open this weekend, the weather has been cold, but clear. We have had no new snow and the sun has taken some of what we skied on last weekend. As the walking paths are still clear, on Friday we walked up the Kitzbüheler Horn, the mountain that serves both St Johann in Tirol and part of the Kitzbühel ski area. The artificial lake used to provide an artificial snow covering for the lower slopes was full, and the surface was like glass in the still conditions. I must have taken thousands of photographs of the Wilder Kaiser mountains, but I think this is one of my most impressive efforts.

I hadn’t planned to start skiing until large areas were open this year, but there was a decent snow covering in the Resterhöhe area above Pass Thurn at the far end of the Kitzbühel ski area, and the sun was shining - so it seemed rude not to give it a go. Although only one run was advertised as being open, there were actually two in operation.  One blue and one red, both served by the same lift.

A report this week compared lift pass prices in French ski resorts and the results pointed to bigger resorts offering better value for money. RelaxNews used the price of a 6-day pass and the skiable area of each resort, and then worked out the price per kilometre of piste. The results varied from €3.42/km in Super Besse to just 34c/km in Les Portes du Soleil. In the eyes of somebody who wants to ski an entire mountain, Les Portes du Soleil is the winning resort.

Morzine and the surrounding area has never been short of a good restaurant or bar to keep us entertained, fed and watered during the winter season. But there are some quite exciting new developments on the way for this coming winter season…

In an effort to improve my skiing I headed off to the Chill Factore in Manchester. My friend Kathryn had found a deal on Groupon and at £9.50 it was a bargain. After rooting around for half an hour I found all my gear and boots, albeit with mismatched socks, and we headed out.

October is the month to buy your discounted lift passes for this coming winter season.

Despite masses of investment in the ski lift infrastructure across the Portes du Soleil in recent years, the full area lift pass is still one of the most reasonably priced in Europe. The value for money really is quite amazing… 650km of piste for just €225 per adult for 6 full days.

However, there are loads of new and discounted lift pass options available this season in Morzine – Les Gets and across the entire Portes du Soleil network.

Probably the most common question that I get asked during the winter season, be it in my capacity as a ski instructor or sometime transfer driver to the airport is, ‘So, what do you do in summer?’ This is normally the second or third question after the two other guaranteed questions, being ‘What’s the snow like?’ (cold, white, attached to the mountain) and ‘How long will it take to get to Chatel?’ (as long as it takes, depends on whether you want me to drive like I am supposed to or if I can drive like I’ve got a 74 number plate, which you rea

When construction began on the new high speed, high capacity lift before the end of last season, there was much excitement. However the recent announcement that the new lift will not be ready until February has raised a few eyebrows.
