Unless you are interested to hear me talk about the ski training that I have been doing more or less constantly since mid-January, I’m afraid you might find this blog entry a little boring.  I’ll try to jazz it up as best I can though.

This is my fourth ski season living in Austria, and I had not yet been to see the Hahnenkamm races. However, the stories I had heard about the main race days being incredibly busy (and alcohol fuelled) made me decide to go on one of the practice days for the downhill. I arrived early, and skied the public run parallel to the Streif several times to work out the best locations for action photographs.

There are various off-the-hill options in Meribel on a white out day. Nachos in Jacks Bar, bowling in the Olympic Centre, the gym (avoid… AVOID!) But can that fulfil your non skiing gran for a week in resort? If she’s a fiend for nachos and guac, then probably. If not, there is a company that can entertain her. And you! Let me introduce Sno Escape. For all of your off-the-mountain adventure needs.

It's cold outside. New year's resolutions are probably wearing thin. This is no time for dieting - it's time for comfort, eating, and comfort eating. And wine. This dish has it all.

On Thursday I’m going to Kitzbühel for the Hahnenkamm practice session hoping to get some good pictures of top skiers in action. The race days are both busy and very rowdy, but the practice days are supposed to be fascinating and relaxed.

So last weekend I took my best camera out to have a practise taking action ski photos. It was a good plan, except at -13 degrees I hadn’t picked a good day to spend with my gloves off, trying to handle the fiddly controls of a camera.

Christmas and New Year weeks have long been and gone and the resort has now quietened down considerably. The snow is finally falling too and the skiing is now all about the powder rather than carving through hardened pistes.

After a mild spell that threatened the snow on lower slopes, it has now turned colder and we’ve had flurries of snow over the weekend to freshen the slopes. With the seasonal crush now behind us the slopes are not too busy when the weather is perfect, and deserted otherwise. I skied with a friend in very light snowfall at Fieberbrunn on Saturday morning and the place was deserted until half past 10.

Following the news that you have to add a breathalyser (or two) to your car equipment when you drive in France, here is an update. It seems that these plans have been shelved indefinitely due to the lack of knowledge of the legal limits by visitors to the country. As you can see from the list at the end the UK has the highest limit - almost double the French limit - which obviously increases the confusion. For more information see our Top 10 tips for driving to the Alps.
