Our Three Valleys blogger, Alf Alderson picks his favourite end-of-season runs.

There’s a lot to be said for spring skiing. Not only do you get all the usual pleasure that comes from blasting round the slopes at Mach 3. You get long, sunny days too, when it feels as though summer is opening up like a flower right in front of your eyes. The relaxed and happy vibe this creates is infectious. It’s almost like hanging out on the beach, but with snow on tap to make things interesting.

When I emigrated to Austria four years ago I knew that I was less than a half hour’s drive from a great range of ski resorts, and so I sought out the best ski guide books available to understand what each resort had to offer, something like the Mad Dog Ski resort guide to Méribel & the 3 Valleys that lived in my bum bag during many ski holidays in France.

Having spent all my holidays thus far in sunny climes, my packing list has usually been pretty straightforward - but I have no idea what to pack for my first ever ski trip.

Like most people I’m a sucker for the end of season ski sales, and a couple of seasons ago I picked up a good deal in the form of a pair of Head Vector LTD boots. They fitted me pretty nicely straight from the box but as the following season wore on they packed down to the extent where there have been days when it’s felt like my feet are racing around on a private little adventure of their own inside the boots.

I have a season to do list. I make one every time I do a season. Learn to snowboard, do a 360 and some other tasks I will sufficiently ignore. But one I have managed to tick off is “go to a Michelin starred restaurant”. And better than this, I have sampled 3 of the 6 (I think 6?!) Michelin starred venues in the 3 Valleys; Azimut in Le Praz, La Bouitte in St Martin and Le Farcon in La Tania.
