Winter X Games

Posted by Tim Wilson 19th March 2012

Since their launch in 1995 the Winter X Games have come to be known as one of the biggest freestyle skiing and snowboarding events on the calendar. Until recently they had never been hosted in Europe, but Tignes is holding them for the 3rd time this year from the 14th to the 16th March.

X Slope, Tignes, France
Over several days, the programme consists of Slopestyle and Superpipe disciplines. Slopestyle is a series of enormous jumps and rails for riders to show off their talent and the Superpipe is like a normal halfpipe but ENORMOUS!

X Pipe, Tignes, France
If the pipe doesn’t look that big take note of the small blob on the left hand side between the first 2 floodlights. Well, that’s an upside down person a few metres in the air! The games have lots of things going on to attract an audience including a show of crazy people on skidoos who also like to spend time upside down very high in the air.

X Skidoo, Tignes, FranceThere are lots of evening activities and promotions including world class Djs and it's an opportunity that many seasonaires relish to meet up and hang out with buddies from seasons past.

About the author

Tim Wilson: Having done my first winter season in Whistler, Canada, I made my European debut in Val Thorens working for Erna Low. They are such a great company that I couldn't resist doing another season in VT before moving to Avoriaz for 2 more, followed by a winter in Val d'Isere. Since then I've been in la Plagne for the last 4 winters, still with Erna Low! Over this time I have gradually been converted from a snowboarder to a skier and now that I am good enough to ski in powder I am generally on two planks rather than one
