Swiss travel deal - two-for-one

Posted by HannahEngelkamp 27th March 2012

I'm a big fan of train travel in any country, but Switzerland really does make the most of it. The trains are gorgeous - often double decker, always clean and tidy and usually on time. And they've kindly filled the country with beautiful mountains and sparkly lakes for you to look at out of the window too. They go in for joined up thinking too, and just now they've got a two-for-one deal on too.

The network

In Switzerland, some 26,000 captivating kilometres of travel by road, rail and waterway can be experienced and enjoyed on the world's densest public transport network – with just a single ticket. It's called the Swiss Pass. And it takes travellers to scenic splendours on panorama trains such as the Glacier Express, to sights of breathtaking natural beauty, and to busy bustling cities such as Zurich or Geneva. The Swiss Pass also includes half-price travel on most mountain railways, as well as free admission to more than 450 museums across the country.

In April, May and from September to November, holders of these passes (1st or 2nd class) will be entitled to take with them an accompanying person free of charge. The holder pays the normal price; the accompanying person travels free. Both are entitled to travel the length and breadth of Switzerland by public transport on rail, road or waterway. Children up to age 16 also travel free of charge.

About the author

Hannah Engelkamp is MadDogSki's editor, which involves a pretty decent balance between trawling around behind the scenes of this website you see before you, and zipping around the pistes and bars of the Alps. Please email me if you've got any suggestions about things you'd like to see on here, and I'll see what I can do (especially if you demand stories on heli-skiing, the world's best spas or vin chaud tests, personally researched. Well, it would be rude not to).
