Great friends of MadDogSki, Libby and Anne, have taken the plunge and decided to go on their first ski holiday, so they headed to the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead for a bit of practice. Here is the start of their journey into the wonderful world of skiing.

In an effort to improve my skiing I headed off to the Chill Factore in Manchester. My friend Kathryn had found a deal on Groupon and at £9.50 it was a bargain. After rooting around for half an hour I found all my gear and boots, albeit with mismatched socks, and we headed out.

In need of some Easter distraction? Don't quite feel like saying goodbye to winter? Why not take the family sledging?

Hemel Hempstead's Snow Centre has the perfect holiday plan, to wear the kids out and burn off the Easter eggs. It's a 67m run with little bumps and jumps to keep things lively, and a choice of three vehicles upon which to make your speedy way to the bottom.

The Chill Factore have a great deal via travelzoo.com

A 2 hour lesson at the Chill Factore in Manchester should cost £80.00 but they have it on offer for just £39.00 - valid from 30th March to 26th August (8 - 30th April excluded)

Great for attempting Snowboarding if you are a skier, or vice versa... opportunity too good to miss?

Learning to ski at 40 is pretty daunting and, I have to admit, not something I thought I would ever do.  However I have been trying to master the art with varying success over the last few years. My technique is not too bad, I know how to turn, how to stop and get on and off chair lifts. Unfortunately I do not have great balance at the best of times so when I am strapped into boots with skis attached fear kicks in. I know it is unreasonable to think that I am going to die on a green run but there it is. So like the lion in The Wizard of Oz I needed to find some courage - but how?

I spent last weekend in snow-capped mountains, but without skis attached to my feet. I occasionally go walking with a group of guys that worked together way back when, and when I received the most recent invite I realized it was at the end of a week when I planned to work in the UK, so signed up without checking the details. The two details I should have paid attention to were “February”, and “Glencoe”.

The worst snow in thirty years, says the radio as I type. Looks like the best to me! Sure, the UK has ground to a halt, but official statistics* show that for every one person who is having a horrible time in a jam on a motorway, there are nine people getting all excited about fluffy stuff falling from the sky.
