As the ski season draws to a close we expect sunny days and slushy snow. This year that came and went and now it's back to winter conditions. Tuesday was the only day this week where the weather was supposed to clear. Alarms were set and at 9am, a peek outside was met with dense fog. I was all but ready to go back to sleep when a friend called with promises of blue skies in the forecast for later on.

Tim Wilson mugshotIf you've got a late season ski trip planned you might find yourself in for an early season summer holiday instead. But, as blogger Tim Wilson points out, that could be rather nice!

Shortly after local prodigy Kevin Rolland won the halfpipe world cup in la Plagne, the resort made the unsentimental decision to destroy the pipe to make use of the snow elsewhere. The photo shows the bit where they've added some to maintain the route to the medical centre in Bellecote!

It's the end of March and despite a bit of fresh snow at altitude, the warm temperatures quickly see off any prospects of much more than spring skiing. I shouldn't complain though... at least la Plagne has a glacier and a good amount of high altitude terrain.

The weather forecast was for 8cm! It started snowing late Thursday night and continued all day Friday. On Saturday morning we found 45cm of snow on our balcony after being woken by very loud avalanche control explosions making the windows rattle but the sky was blue and the sun was shining.

After a ‘scratchy’ start to the season the snow finally arrived, about 30 cm had fallen over a couple of days in early January so when we woke to a lovely sunny, very cold, alpine sparkly day we took the opportunity to go out early and find some first tracks. We headed for the Le Z drag and on to the Verdons Nord lift for the Bozelet Ridge, as we arrived at the top we popped out of the shadow and into the sunshine immediately warming us and were welcomed by the stunning views over towards the Vanoise National Park and Courchevel!
