For over 20 years, La Clusaz has been celebrating the end of the season with a two day festival, the ‘Defi Foly’, at Lake Confins in Lake Annecy Ski Resorts region. This weekend, 28th and 29th April, over 150 crazy competitors will try and cross the 180m lake on all manner of sliding objects, from skis, to snowboards to monoskis,  all trying to beat the 155m record set in 2010.

April is here. That means the last month of snow in most European ski resorts. Seasonaires everywhere are panicking as they try to cram in more mountain time, BBQs and partying before it all ends. The warm April weather arrived weeks early, causing rivers of melted snow on the lower slopes. With the memory of the 2011 season ending prematurely still fresh in all our minds, the talk here in March was “what if there’s no more snow?” Thankfully, 2012 has been nothing like 2011.

Back in 2002, I was drawn to being a ski bum after working long days in London. An apartment in Brides-les-Bains near Méribel was offered to me so I flew to Geneva, then took four poorly-connected slow trains, requiring stair climbs at each interchange. The taxi ride from the station involved the driver asking “Où travaillez-vous?” (“Where do you work?”), which I thought had something to do with travel. I smiled and shrugged and said “No parlez” based on one of my mum’s Paul Young album titles.

Taking a drag lift up a gentle blue run over in the Merdassier area of La Clusaz, the last thing I expected to see was a series of tipis, including this one, pictured, alongside the drag lift. It’s a toilet — a tipipi. This is a French play on words, as French kids say they need to do a ‘pipi’ when they need to pee.
