The ski season here in La Clusaz ended last weekend, and work has already begun for next year’s ski season. Last October, a sign was attached to the lift ticket office at Bossonnet.

Snow parks use machinery to sculpt kickers, spines and pipes, but there’s another type of snow sculpture made with shovels and hands only.

La Clusaz split my skiing life. Heading west from the centre of La Clusaz, up Cret du Merle, down through fresh snow on black Lapiaz, and over to ‘Balme’, I was back to how I skied BC (before children). Skiing off piste as much as possible, and as fast as possible. I headed down the linking pistes to get to the 2477m viewing point at the top of the Col de Balme chair, the spot that a local told us on a chair lift en route has one of the best views of Mont Blanc.

Spending a lot of time in a ski resort leads to getting to know the local shop owners and staff. This can result in free ski and snowboard waxing, complimentary food and drink, and preferential treatment. I managed to blag my way into the snowboard test for professionals, right here in La Clusaz, and then the ski test in Méribel a week later. It was a semi-legitimate blag: I work for the shop every now and again.

This ski season has been an odd one. After steady snow in November and early openings all over the European Alps, the weather warmed up. Some more snow has fallen, but not as much as usual. My European friends are used to skiing on fluffy powder with a decent snow depth and on hard-packed, solid snow in busy areas.

For over 20 years, La Clusaz has been celebrating the end of the season with a two day festival, the ‘Defi Foly’, at Lake Confins in Lake Annecy Ski Resorts region. This weekend, 28th and 29th April, over 150 crazy competitors will try and cross the 180m lake on all manner of sliding objects, from skis, to snowboards to monoskis,  all trying to beat the 155m record set in 2010.

April is here. That means the last month of snow in most European ski resorts. Seasonaires everywhere are panicking as they try to cram in more mountain time, BBQs and partying before it all ends. The warm April weather arrived weeks early, causing rivers of melted snow on the lower slopes. With the memory of the 2011 season ending prematurely still fresh in all our minds, the talk here in March was “what if there’s no more snow?” Thankfully, 2012 has been nothing like 2011.

Back in 2002, I was drawn to being a ski bum after working long days in London. An apartment in Brides-les-Bains near Méribel was offered to me so I flew to Geneva, then took four poorly-connected slow trains, requiring stair climbs at each interchange. The taxi ride from the station involved the driver asking “Où travaillez-vous?” (“Where do you work?”), which I thought had something to do with travel. I smiled and shrugged and said “No parlez” based on one of my mum’s Paul Young album titles.

Taking a drag lift up a gentle blue run over in the Merdassier area of La Clusaz, the last thing I expected to see was a series of tipis, including this one, pictured, alongside the drag lift. It’s a toilet — a tipipi. This is a French play on words, as French kids say they need to do a ‘pipi’ when they need to pee.
