So, I head out to Arinsal, I turned out to be going to Arcilis. They are both Vallnord but apparently two unconnected separate hills. While heading out I hear it is a good place for beginners: it`s flat, that sort of thing.

At last, a small taste of that oh so rare white stuff. We have been treated with a nice little flurry of about 15 cm of fresh snow up here in Zermatt. If you really go looking you may almost get knee deep in those sacred wind deposited spots. It’s been a long wait and it’s actually pretty good to not see the sun for a couple of days. 6 weeks of blue bird days has been a treat but we were desperate for snow and it’s arrived just in time for all you lucky lot on half term break with your littlens.

It’s quite hard not to turn your attention towards the summer when spring flowers are popping up from under the snow and the goggle tan is developing nicely. To encourage further thoughts of long sunny days in the mountains the Portes du Soleil people this week launched the 8th annual ‘PassPortes du Soleil’ mountain bike trek. The ‘PassPortes’ (as it is known locally) is a 3 day mountain bike tour of 9 Portes du Soleil resorts including Morzine. 6000 mountain bikers pedal along an 80km route, climbing 1000 metres and descending 6000 metres along the way.

Learning to ski at 40 is pretty daunting and, I have to admit, not something I thought I would ever do.  However I have been trying to master the art with varying success over the last few years. My technique is not too bad, I know how to turn, how to stop and get on and off chair lifts. Unfortunately I do not have great balance at the best of times so when I am strapped into boots with skis attached fear kicks in. I know it is unreasonable to think that I am going to die on a green run but there it is. So like the lion in The Wizard of Oz I needed to find some courage - but how?

I spent last weekend in snow-capped mountains, but without skis attached to my feet. I occasionally go walking with a group of guys that worked together way back when, and when I received the most recent invite I realized it was at the end of a week when I planned to work in the UK, so signed up without checking the details. The two details I should have paid attention to were “February”, and “Glencoe”.

Well the girls did it - they won...  How wonderful. They won in the Best Visitors Trail category and we are all very very proud of them - especially as they had to endure all those bars, sunshine and skiing!  Hannah will be putting up a post detailing their run when her hangover clears and she can see singularly again... So well done again girls and just love the costumes - and no, I won't be sporting this little number at the Ski Show in October!!
