Soaring temperatures and little snow means that the slopes are looking iffy at the moment. First thing in the morning is the ideal time to get a fast ski, although only if you enjoy skiing on substances like ice. At around 1pm the slush becomes more prolific, so I have found this is the best time to head to the park. Definitely worth staying away from La Daille later in the day, as well as heading down the Face.

After 18 weeks, the season is finally drawing to a close. As you would expect conditions are fairly marginal at present. Although, according to the local folk, this is the best end of season snow pack the resort has seen for years. By now, the Luc Alphand run is usually nothing but a thin strip of snow that grows thinner as the final day of the season approaches. Fortunately, due to the late season dumps we experienced a couple of weeks ago, the lowest runs in Villeneuve and Chantermele are still covered right to the edges with snow; albeit slushy, mogul-filled snow, but snow all the same.

The snow is fast turning from slushy moguls to muddy grass, the sun seems to be shining rather a lot, and this is the last report from St Anton for season 2010. I thought I would get in to the end of season spirit and ask a kangaroo court of winter only residents for their thoughts on the bests of the season. Here goes:

Well well well, The snow has finally arrived in Zermatt. Whilst all other lowland resorts are closing up and preparing for the summer, the Zermatters are still very much in Skiing mode. The past week has seen a total of 60cm of fresh snow fall here, with more on the way! The pistes are still in great condition and about 90% of them are still open. Of course they are a bit slushy and wet but the mornings are still as good as ever and with nice quiet pistes, it’s a prime time for a visit to the home of the Matterhorn.

Conditions are amazing throughout the valley, considering just how late in the season it actually is. After a couple of weeks of sun, and little snow fall during March things took a sharp turn for the better, and it looks set to continue. Certain area’s have actually been filled back up due to the abundance of snow, and deep powder days seem to have become pretty typical for at least half the time. The highest region of the resort, Monetier, was actually closed for a couple of days due to the avalanche risk caused by moderate wind, and over a meter of snow falling in one night. Most areas are back open now with the exception of the Aguilette area in Chantermele. However, the intense sun from the last two days should ensure that the dangerous areas are re-opened soon.

Birthdays.  Mine falls on April Fools.  You can imagine the litany of jokes and tricks I had to endure in my younger years.  'To be honest it's quite fitting', I am told by those who get to know me before they know my birth date.  I can not help but agree.

Weather Upadate - Buckets of snow this week as the clouds came in over the weekend and dumped on us. Monday was still snowing and there was waist deep powder everywhere. Tuesday was a bluebird and one of the best days of the season, the snow on north facing slopes was fluffy and cold, you can see what it was like on the attached pictures. Since then its been getting warmer and warmer and the pistes in the afternoons are mogulled and slushy, fun but very tiring on the legs.

The week-long snowfall has brought smiles to many faces in resort, as the majority of pistes are open again. Temperatures are soaring though, and on the sunniest days the jackets can even be left behind at home. Here is the latest from resort:

At the end of March the warm temperatures and strong sun took away a huge amount of the snow, BUT, Then our usual end of season dump finally arrived. Four days of snow and cold temperatures made it feel like winter had started all over again skiing fresh powder everywhere, and thanks to Megeve’s terrain we only need one dump and every bit of off piste is opened up. Good times!
