It’s official; tomorrow sees the official kick-off of the winter season here in Chamonix! From tomorrow (8/12), Chamonix is open for skiing every day, with Les Grands Montets, widely known as the most technical of the local areas, opening the majority of their terrain. Marmottons, Pierre A Ric and most importantly Bochard will be open, the latter of the three being the high-speed gondola that accesses some of the best terrain in Europe. We’re off!
Just another rainy interseason in the Alps, right? Wrong! Winter 2007/8 has kick-started with a gigantic snowstorm, news of new parks in the resorts around town, the descent of hundreds of Gore-Tex-clad seasonnaires from all around the world, and best of all, Mad Dog Ski here with you for another winter, keeping you up-to-date with every minute detail of winter life in Chamonix.
This week has pretty much seen perfect mid-winter skiing & riding conditions; tons of fresh snow lying around everywhere and beautiful blue skies overhead. We took a walk up to Lognan, the Les Grands Montets midstation, to see how much snow had fallen, and were quickly up to our knees! Fortunately we came across a friendly beagle halfway through the hike who was more than happy to show us the way. Having to call its owner later that afternoon and explain how we had accidentally taken her dog on an epic, marathon hike was slightly more awkward!
Jamie Stevenson, a Reservations Manager from Ski Independence, has just beaten the Guinness World Record for the most countries skied in one month, raising over £3000 for Disability Snowsport UK in the process. The old record stood at 15 countries in under 31 days. Jamie achieved 17 countries is just 21 days.
The last hurrah of the season is nearly upon us and there are some great bargains to be had. Here are some great discounts from Erna Low with a choice of resort, accommodation only or travel included ski holidays.

Easter is fast approaching and the weather is heating up across Europe. However the ski resorts are working hard on keeping as many pistes open as possible as well as doing a few 'snow dances'. The going may get a bit sludgy in parts but who can't love skiing in the spring sunshine?
Make a last-minute hop to the ski slopes this Easter and save up to £300 per person. The Lapin (rabbit) run leads virtually to the door of Fish&Pip’s chalets in Meribel Village, where (hot) chocolate, delicious food and supreme service abound.
Here are a selection of resorts across the Alps with some great savings. All these offers are from Pierre & Vacances, their range of apartments across the French Alps are ideal for families and groups of skiers keen to take to the slopes this April. Contrary to popular belief April skiing and snow conditions are often fantastic with many high-altitude resorts boasting historically good snow records and some of the best snowfalls of the season. P&V are offering savings of up to 30% and free children’s lift passes in a variety of high-altitude destinations.
