La Tania - France

The relatively young resort of La Tania (La tan-ya) is an outpost of Courchevel and was designed with ecological considerations in mind. The energy for the entire resort (including lifts and snowmaking) is provided by a hydro-electric system. La Tania’s first purpose was to house the journalists covering the 1992 Winter Olympics and nowadays it still only has 4000 guest beds, making it a quiet resort at the edge of the vast Trois Vallees. The traditional-style chalets are dissected by the two main runs back into the resort and the shelter afforded by the trees ensures that it is normally possible to ski back to the door despite the relatively low altitude at 1350m.

Facilities in the resort are limited but the luxury boutiques of Courchevel are just a free bus ride away. The nightlife in La Tania is livelier than most people expect and your money will go further than in Courchevel, but the resort is ultimately still a place for families rather than party-goers.

  • Planning your trip

Being such a big ski area, there are plenty of transport links to take you from the surrounding airports to the village (most fly into Geneva). Located in the French Alps, La Tania is home to some serious skiing, with access to the Three Valleys, making it very popular. For this reason, it’s always advisable to book well more...

  • Where to stay

La Tania has something for everyone when it comes to accommodation and offers better value for money than some of its more illustrious neighbours. The downside of course is that neighbouring Courchevel and Meribel have the livelier and more diverse nightlife. There are several apartment blocks in La Tania, a more...

  • Food and drink

The image of La Tania as a family resort has somewhat hampered it’s growth in terms of the après ski scene with most visitors to the area still concentrating on the nightlife around Meribel and Courchevel (accessed by free shuttle bus). There’s not a huge choice with just 6 bars and 8 restaurants, but anyone more...

  • On the piste

Being located between Meribel and Courchevel La Tania has no shortage of terrain for any standard of skier or boarder. The local area has 62 lifts though and it is well worth exploring the nearby pistes before setting off all over the Three Valleys, especially as the local slopes are often the quietest in the region. Novices are more...

    Chalet des Deux Lacs
This is a hugely popular restaurant run by a family of incredibly friendly brothers. They don't take reservations so if you plan to eat here, arrive early or late. Although there's not a wide vegetarian choice, the assiette vegetarienne is great (goat's cheese and leek quiche with vegetables). They also have an 'assiette skieur' with bacon, cheese, egg, hamburger, chips and salad. Children's menu. Next to the busy terrace there is also a take away snack bar.
