Mad Dog Ski: Ski Resort guidebooks for Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland

Zermatt - Switzerland

Sitting beneath one of Switzerland's most recognisable peaks, Zermatt is often argued to be one of the best ski resorts in the world. This could be due to its charming village, fantastic ski area, mountain restaurants, or perhaps simply its breathtaking views, always dominated by the presence of the Matterhorn.

Zermatt

Kurt Mueller

Zermatt’s ski area consists of 300km of marked slopes, 38km unpisted downhill routes and some of the most breathtaking off-piste you’ll find in the Alps, complimented by the awe-inspiring views that are always dominated by the presence of the Matterhorn.

If you enjoy food, the abundant choice of excellent mountain restaurants and the many different cuisines to be found down in the charming town will make your holiday. Whichever of these is most important to you, it’s easy to see why Zermatt deserves its reputation as a world-class resort.

Our penny's worth

You can’t go to Zermatt without checking out the Igloo Village. Each village is rebuilt every year, and gives you the chance to immerse yourself in the ancient traditions of the Inuit (with some modern comforts!). Indulge in either a sauna or a whirlpool, enjoy some mulled wine at the Igloo Bar and for dinner a genuine cheese fondue. Then get up and ski right off on your next adventure.

Don't leave Zermatt without...

• Drinking in the eclectic bar of the Alex Hotel – a warm and welcoming evening
• Skiing over the border and 14km down to Breuil-Cervinia in Italy for the day
• Dance in you ski boots at the Hennu Stall apres-ski hutte
• Eating at the African fusion restaurant, The Pipe for something that isn’t cheese
• Meeting friends at the uber-cool Vernissage and catching a film or just sipping cocktails
