Flying
As there are so few tour operators offering Flims as a destination, the easiest way to visit is to make your own travel arrangements. The best airports for access to Flims are Zurich and Basel, both of which offer fast and easy onward connections by road or rail.
One of the things to look out for is that quite often, the cheaper the airline, the more complicated and expensive their baggage policy is. This can make carrying skis or snowboards to your destination costly if you are not prepared.
Train
The fastest journey time from London Waterloo to Chur via Paris takes 13 hours 12 minutes traveling overnight. The train departs London Waterloo at 5.40pm and arrives in Chur at 7.52am the next day. This connects with a Postauto coach at 7.58am, reaching Flims at 8.36am. This option is best for anyone fed up with the hassle of flying, the delays and extensive security checks and who wants to get away after work and relax into the journey.
If you're flying into any of the Swiss airports, the train is definitely the best choice for getting around Switzerland in comfort. Return tickets from Zurich to Flims, including the bus connection, currently cost 102.80CHF, and from Basel 150.40CHF (get off at Chur train station and take the bus). (www.sbb.ch).
Transfers
Bus transfers are the most economical way to travel to resort from the airport or train station. If possible, try to book your tickets well in advance - the buses can get very busy and some companies act on a reservation-only basis.
If you hire a car from either Basel or Zurich, road connections to Flims are excellent. The village is only 15 minutes away from the motorway exit on the A3. To drive through Switzerland you'll need a motorway pass (vignette) that you can buy at the border for 40CHF. If your accommodation does not provide parking, there's a multi-story car park next to the lift station in Flims.
For door-to-door, taxis are a good option, although not the cheapest.
Self-drive
Driving from the South East of the UK to Flims takes around 14 hours including breaks and traveling across the channel by Eurotunnel. Flims is around 975km from Calais and this part of the journey should take around 10 hours. The journey will be fastest avoiding Friday evenings and peak travel times. It is also sensible to fill up with petrol before reaching the resort as prices rise with the altitude.
To drive through Switzerland you'll need a motorway pass (vignette) that you can buy at the border for CHF40. Don't forget to check your insurance cover for European accident and carry details of your breakdown service (RAC, AA etc). You will also need to carry a first aid kit and a warning triangle. It's advisable to carry snow chains, and remember that if your car is rear wheel drive, you're likely to get quite stuck if it snows heavily.
