Mad Dog Ski: Ski Resort guidebooks for Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland

La Thuile - Italy

La Thuile was once a mining town but has now transformed itself into a modern and well-equipped winter and summer resort. The slopes are flanked on one side by Mont Blanc and Mount Rutor on the other. In 1986 it was linked with the French ski resort of La Rosiere, one lift ticket is enough to ski in both countries.

The 150km of slopes are well groomed with plenty of scope for all abilities. There are blue, red and black runs to choose from with some lovely long runs from Chaz Dura through woods, passing mountain huts, old military outposts and relics from World War II arriving back into the resort. Over 300 snow cannons ensure good conditions on the 22 km of slopes.

Mountain huts offer skiers a choice of sandwiches made or local dishes, all rounded off with a 'alla valdostanna' - coffee.  Or if you fancy a tipple don't forget to try the local liqueurs, grappa or genepy.

In resort there are ski rental shops where you can find the best brands of skis and snowboards alike. There are also four tracks for Nordic skiing and lessons avaialble if you want to give it a try.

La Thuile is also a summer resort offerning staggeringly beautiful scenery for walking. Several of the chairlifts are open allowing you to explore further and enjoy the views. Mountain biking is also a popular option with the Piccola San Bernardo chairlift transporting bikes and people, with two descent options, one towards Lake Longet and the other directly into La Thuile.

Children are well looked after with a free towrope and a miniclub hosted by the La Thuile enterntainment team, free of charge. The mascot of La Thuile, Thuilly - a massive Saint Bernard - is always around for the children to have their photo taken with !
