Top tips for

Flying

Geneva airport is only one hour away from Megeve and has the best all round facilities and choice of flights. However, the charter flight terminals can get very crowded. Lyon St Exupery airport is also close, though the charter section of the airport is probably the most notorious in the Alps and often referred to as the cattle shed (Geneva is the choice for 99.9 percent of visitors).

Train

Travelling by train to Megeve is a good option, because transfer at the other end is so easy. At weekends during the winter, the TGV from Paris goes directly to Sallanches Combloux Megeve, which is only 12km from the resort, although during the week you will have to change trains at Annecy. From Sallanches there are frequent connection buses.

Eurostar trains are available direct to the Alps, either daytime or overnight. Sleeper/snowtrains commence either from Paris or Calais. All trains can be booked with Rail Europe, although frustratingly, trains in France can only be booked 60 days or less in advance.

Transfers

Bus transfers are the most economical way to travel to resort from the airport or train station. Try to book your tickets well in advance.

Hiring a car
is the most flexible option of travelling to Megeve. Be aware though that parking in Megeve can get tricky, especially during the holidays, and roads coming down from Mont D'Arbois can get very busy. Winter tyres, snow chains and ski racks are normally available at additional costs (although required by law) - make sure you request them when booking.

For door-to-door, private transfers or taxis are a good option, but not the cheapest.

Self-drive

To help with driving routes, check out www.rac.co.uk or www.drivingabroad.co.uk for directions and tips. Before you go, check with your car insurers that you will be covered for your time in Europe. Also remember to carry a warning triangle, spare light bulbs, flashlight and a first aid box. Also recommended are spare fuses and a fan belt. And don't forget the snow chains!
