Courmayeur - Italy
The resort is a refreshing alternative to the mega resorts of France, intent on style and sophistication. This is a prime destination for those who like to ski, but also for those who don’t! There is more than enough skiing for a few days and the nearby resorts of Chamonix and La Thuile are easy enough to reach if you crave extra runs. For the non-skier the 60 restaurants and over a hundred boutiques will ensure that there is no chance of boredom setting in.In recent years the resort has become something of a mecca for off-piste fans too as Chamonix veterans realise that Mont Blanc has an Italian side! Whether you crave an adrenalin rush or place more importance on long lunches you are likely to find something to suit in Courmayeur. There should be no shortage of options in terms of access either with Geneva, Turin and Milan airports all offering easy transfers.

Where to stay
Courmayeur’s mainstay of accommodation consists of hotels and it’s easy to find some good value packages, especially for weekends. Many of the hotels are located around the centre of the village, on or around Via Roma. The large 4-star Grand Hotel Royal and Golf in the centre of the village places you more...

Food and drink
This is a definitely a resort for those who come skiing for the luxury of long lunches as much as for a hard day on the mountain. The ratio of 23 mountain restaurants to 22 lifts should tell us something about the importance of the cuisine! Italians are renowned for the care and attention they lavish on more...

Things to do
Courmayeur manages to cater as much for its non-skiing visitors as it does for the powder hounds. If you’re not mad about the pistes, or simply would like a day off, there is plenty to keep you occupied from a blissful thermal spa or well-equipped sports hall to more...

On the piste
The pistes of Courmayeur are split between two sectors, Checrouit and Dolonne / Val Veny, with 26 runs and 100km of piste between them. Whilst not an extensive ski area it is well served by a largely modern network of 22 chairlifts and gondolas, and you can be confident of the conditions with more...

MadDogView
Buy a lift pass for three or more consecutive days and you can ski for a day in other Aosta Valley resorts, Chamonix or the Grand Massif.
In each of the bars, you’ll find an array of antipasti for you to nibble with your aperitivo (appetizer) drinks. Be careful though, the quality and quantity of the antipasti on offer can easily fill you up before your meal (or even be your dinner).

Our favourites
Chiecco
Definitely one of our favourites with all the dishes homemade with quality ingredients. Add the intimate setting and quirky décor and it’s easy to see how people can lose a few hours in this charming restaurant. Enjoy the cosiness of this mountain cabin or sit outside on the terrace on a sunny day. Don’t miss the delightful homemade pâté and jams (€9-12) and if you feel like a change from the fresh pastas (€9-12), try the deer medallions (€19) or one of the daily specials. The apple strudel looks (and tastes) like a work of art and at the end of all that, the homemade grappa will give your digestion a kick and get you back on the slopes. -
