Food and drink - Schladming - Austria

Most of the huts on the mountain are based on winter food (heavy soups, dumplings, sausages and stews) but the town offers more variety with Chinese, Mexican and Caribbean food as well as the traditional Styrian cuisine. The apres-ski is fairly low key in Schladming, with most of the action happening around the bottom of the Planai as people finish skiing. The town centre bars such as Marias, Extra Small, Szenario and La Porta, tend to get busy after 9pm.

Five to try

Siglu

A glass iglu - you can't miss it! In true Austrian-style, this place only closes when the last person leaves. Try the local favourite of Jagermeister and Red Bull.

Onkel Willy's Hutte
You won't hear enough about this place. An Austrian treasure that has great service and some lovely dishes.

Seiter Hutte

This is a trust-worthy self-service restaurant noted for it's consistently good food, just off run 31.

Marias Mexican
If you get bored of the dumplings, the food here is classic Mexican and popular with locals.

Alte Post
This is one to save for a special occasion. Vegetarians will also do well here, as they have three options that change daily.

Our penny's worth

Don't just stick to what you know best. Austrian cuisine is definitely up there with the best of them and you really should dip in and out of the local cuisine. Try Wiener Schnitzel, a traditional dish of breadcrumbed and fried veal escalope. Tafelspitz is the most famous food, regarded as Austria’s ‘national dish’ and consists simply of boiled beef. Goulash, which is made of beef, pepper, paprika and onion is also worth a taste, and don’t forget Apfelstrude - the classic pudding.
